Most people are good candidates for dental implants. It is important to note at this time that before giving any patient a treatment plan, we do a complete review of their medical and dental health to assure maximum results. Some people have health problems or anatomical limitations that may need correcting before dental implants can be placed.
For example, uncontrolled diabetes, untreated, and uncontrolled periodontal disease can lead to premature loss of teeth, implants, and cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
Some people have large maxillary sinuses (an air pocket in the bone above the upper back teeth) with very little bone available to place implants. This is something that is common and can be corrected easily. Another potential problem is insufficient bone in the lower jaw. Again, this is something that can usually be corrected.
Smoking and the use of tobacco products is another factor that, if left uncorrected, leads to the premature loss of teeth and implants as well as premature death.
In most cases, prudent health choices and treatment can make most people good candidates for dental implants.
