Traditionally, dental implants were thought to need six to nine months for the healing bone to grow up against the implant in a solid fashion. With newer methods to make the implant surfaces bio-compatible, they integrate into the bone much faster, as early as two months.
In some cases, it is possible to place the implant and immediately place a temporary tooth on it. However, with immediate temporaries, they are usually made for looks, not function. After a few months healing, the permanent crown is placed and made to function like a real tooth. If multiple teeth are replaced and connected together, it is possible to restore these in function as soon as the final restorations can be made.
